I used ether a coupla times to show up invisible platforms, but that was it

The Claim Check. Well OK, you need it to get the Biggoron's Sword but then it lingers around in your inventory for the rest of the game, useless. Although, only if you complete the Biggoron's sword sidequest.

The mirror shield in MC, though - that's just pointless

You don't even get it until you've finished the game - and by then, you'll always have something else equipped

Yes, which is why I was surprised when I got the Mirror Shield before beating WW because MC was my first Zelda game.

Mirror Shield usually is useful though, just not in Minish Cap.
